Driftwood
The Arena residence is tuned to its location, designed to allow its occupants to experience the coastal lifestyle of North Avoca, whilst retaining a sense of privacy. The project seeks to reinvigorate and refurbish an existing house. The main works involved the recladding and restructure of the internal footprint to maximise the sightlines to the beach below. The house was reconfigured into three parts. The dwelling retains a sense of luxury with the use of lift core which not only provides vertical circulation but acts as a light well, dispersing light through to the lower levels. The entire project revolves around capturing the views from the residences commanding position. Design by Maple have generated this by creating view lines to the coastline which can be captured deep within the floorplan. Deep-edged skylights puncture the roof and dramatically capture and channel natural light, while a large rear window provides the occupants a connection to the rear landscaped yard. Each level has a large wrap around balcony, which provides connection externally to the spaces, acting as a device to catch and control access to natural light and ocean breezes. Internally, the spaces have been immaculately thought out and adorned. Modern timber floors and warm tiling and wall to floor Venetian plastering provides the spaces with warmth through materiality. The Arena residence is an accomplished and creative adaption of the beach house.
