Bungalow North Shore

This project involved a breathtaking renovation and addition to a large federation era California Bungalow. The vision was to create the perfect family home for a large family of 4 children, while also catering to entertaining large gatherings of friends and family. The main living area was maximised to ensure a sense of scale and open plan, introducing large 6m vaulted ceilings and an unobstructed flow from alfresco area to the dining and living area. Two schemes were carefully selected for materiality and finishing to retain the original character of the federation home and introduce elements of modern contemporary to contrast. The addition was designed to contrast the federation character of the existing house, with recycled masonry walls and a zincalume standing seam roof. Internally, the contemporary industrial theme was continued with polished concrete floors and a large polished concrete island. The real hero piece of the interior is a massive, truly unique, 5m high shou sugi ban kitchen with brass trims, bench top, and splashback. The dark theme of the charred cedar kitchen was continued by staining the original floorboard black and contrasting with a large limestone feature wall.
